Why Humanity May Need a New Infrastructure for the AI Century
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly making access to intelligence more abundant. But as technology evolves continuously, a new scarcity may emerge: humanity’s ability to continuously learn, adapt, govern, decide and evolve alongside it. The greatest opportunity of the AI century may therefore lie not only in building smarter machines, but in building the infrastructure that continuously develops human capability.
Every generation inherits a world transformed by the discoveries of those who came before. Agriculture enabled settlement. The printing press expanded access to knowledge. Industrialization transformed production. Electricity became a universal utility. The Internet connected information and people across the world. Today, Artificial Intelligence represents the next great transformation.
Yet history shows that technology alone never transforms civilization. Breakthroughs become transformative only when people, institutions and infrastructure evolve around them. The steam engine required factories and railways. Electricity required power grids and regulation. The Internet required communications networks, cybersecurity, digital governance and billions of people learning new ways of living and working. Technology creates possibility; humanity creates transformation.
Every technological revolution also changes what society considers scarce. Agriculture reduced the scarcity of food. Industrialization reduced the scarcity of production. The Internet reduced the scarcity of information. Artificial Intelligence may increasingly reduce the scarcity of access to capable intelligence. But scarcity does not disappear—it shifts. For most of history, human development could remain episodic because technological change was relatively gradual. People were educated, entered a profession, accumulated experience and applied that knowledge for decades. Artificial Intelligence changes this assumption. Technology is now evolving continuously, while the systems through which humanity develops capability remain largely based on stages—education, graduation, training, certification and occasional reskilling.
This creates a growing mismatch. AI is compressing cycles of change from generations to years, from years to months and increasingly from months to weeks.
